Christchurch Earthquake
On the 22nd of February Christchurch suffered massive destruction from a Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake close to the City at a shallow depth. Our Lodge rooms at Akaroa lost the top part of it's Refectory chimney in the 7.1 M Earthquake of 4 September 2010.
Post Earthquake repairs.
The chimney has been restored to full operation and the historic (homely) refectory fire was ceremoniously lit on Friday 15th April by our most senior member, WBro Frank Helps RH, marking the completion of the repairs to the damage caused by the earthquake.
Originally added to the rooms in 1903, the fire is the main source of heat for the refectory. It was an evening to remember as we also celebrated Frank's 99th Birthday!
99 Years Young!
Frank's stately old house was significantly affected by the September 2010 earthquake loosing its chimneys and water system. The house was damaged to the extent that it could not be occupied.
Recognised by Freemasons New Zealand with a Role of Honour election, Frank, a 50 year veteran was presented by the Lodge with Honorary Membership.
ANZAC
Each year, The Phoenix brethren, in a brief ceremony of remembrance, honour their brothers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. At the ANZAC Community Service a wreath is formally laid at the Cenotaph in the Akaroa Memorial Grounds.
The Cenotaph suffered damage in the 4 September 2010 earthquake and is currently fenced off for safety reasons.
The War Memorial Trustees are seeking to raise $100,000 to fund restoration.

Coming events
The brethren are currently engaged in several charitable projects which will be reported here as they progress. Of importance is the continuing mutual support within the membership so we can collectively support the community.
The Lodge welcomes the new brethren who are joining us over the present few months to add their strength and abilities to the purposes of Freemasonry.

Special items
Preservation work on our historic building, undertaken to ensure it continues to serve the Lodge and the community, is now complete. We're continuing our maintenance to a high standard because we are proud to be a part of the Banks Peninsula community.
The Akaroa Mail records that the early furniture, some of which remains in use today, was "made of Kauri and brought down from Auckland."
The Masters Chair was donated in 1902, the pavement and carpet, featured in the accompanying picture, date from 1940. Documented history records: Early in 1908 the refectory was occupied, and new Tessellated Pavement, linoleum and various sundries for the Lodge room were authorized to be imported from England.
