The Phoenix Lodge No 43, Akaroa Lighthouse

LIGHTHOUSE DAY -2003

Great weather with good promotion ensured success for both the Akaroa Lighthouse Preservation Society and the Radio Amateur activity. A constant stream of visitors confirmed the wide interest in this historic structure.

Still in working condition, the Lighthouse acts as a tourist beacon but is lit occasionally for special occasions such as New Years Eve. When first lit on the 1st of January, 1880, the light was a kerosene lantern and the French lens system rotated by a weight system requiring hand winding every few hours. There are no seats in the structure, the Lighthouse Keepers having to remain standing throughout their shift.

Situated at Akaroa Heads the two Lighthouse Keepers remained isolated until a telephone line was installed in February 1885. A Kerosene electric generator was installed in 1935 converting to diesel in 1951 when the light was also changed to electric bulb.

Replaced by an automatic light in 1977, the Lighthouse was relocated to its present site in 1980. It is now a favoured tourist attraction and an Icon of the town featuring in many posters, films and prublicity brouchures.

The day was organised by members of Phoenix Lodge in conjunction with the Akaroa Lighthouse preservation Society. Akaroa resident members were involved with Bro. McNeil representing the Preservation Society; Bros. Hyde & Carrell activated the amateur radio activities; and other members providing visitor services.
